Dubai: A light earthquake in the sea some 190km from Dubai was detected by officials on Sunday.

However, no one reported feeling a tremor anywhere in the UAE, Dubai Municipality said.

The seismological LAN at the municipality, the first network to monitor earthquakes in the UAE, detected the quake on Sunday at 5.18pm, northeast of Musandam region, at 4.9 on the Richter scale.

Eman Al Khatibi, head of the geodetic and marine survey section, said the municipality has developed a seismic monitoring system to issue an immediate report on a seismic intensity map and its values in all the cities of the UAE with the aim of enabling a quick response and determining the effect of the tremor.

This development comes to meet the requirements of the responsible authorities and the public to facilitate the access of information, and to educate residents of Dubai emirate in line with Dubai Municipality’s vision for public safety.
