Here comes a brand new year, that time of the year when people get busy making New Year’s resolutions!
As for me, I have a rule about resolutions — I just don’t make any!
Research shows that 40 per cent of people worldwide drop their New Year resolutions before June, and just eight per cent of New Year resolutions see the light of day by the end of the year.
Not very encouraging statistics, are they? So what I do instead is a make review of the year gone by and a vision for the year ahead.
Over the years, this has almost become a tradition for me, and it has worked each time. So here are the key things I have learnt about New Year goal setting:
1. Put some soul into your goal
At the same time last year, I wrote down my vision to grow my business to greater heights. Not because, this is how it “should” be, but because I had a vision for my company, and I wanted to see this vision turn to reality, not matter what it took.
2. Grow with the flow
I did many things in 2014 that challenged my thinking at its very core. New opportunities changed my perceptions. I got to travel to 10 countries in 13 months, and to me, nothing expands my horizons more than travel. It feeds my soul, and inspires me to go forward on my path.
3. Drop the clutter
I have realised that sometimes some goals need to be dropped, or changed. Sometimes, we need to be realistic. We must stop and look to see if the goals are really working out for us. If it is not taking us further on our path, we must let them go. Likewise, we must learn to drop everything that is weighing us down and not letting us fly.
4. Enjoy the journey, don’t wait for the destination
Through so many years of experience I have come to realise that a big part of being goal-oriented is to enjoy the journey. Ironically, attaining your goal should not be your only goal — you must learn to enjoy the journey as well.
5. Listen to your soul
Connecting with yourself is a mission in itself. Only when we get a glimpse of what lies within can we handle everything else. I realised in my busiest hour, that taking a few moments to centre myself and connect with myself helped me connect with so many more people. My family bonds thickened, and so did my rapport with friends all around the world.
When you put these five little pointers into action, your resolutions can be one among those eight per cent that see fruition. Wishing you much success, happiness and prosperity in 2015, and beyond!
