Hot young Bollywood couple Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have India raving about them. The loved-up stars both made their Bollywood debut on the same day and became teenage heartthrobs overnight.
Padukone scored a big hit with Om Shanti Om while Kapoor received critical acclaim for his role in Saawariya even though the film was not well received.
At the time, Kapoor was romantically linked with his Saawariya co-star Sonam, while Padukone was linked with popular Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
But none of them turned out to be a better match than Kapoor and Padukone, whose love blossomed during the shoot of their forthcoming film, Bachna Ae Haseeno in Australia.
On Saturday, they both picked up a Zee Cine Award 2008 — he for Best Male Debutant and she for Best Female Debutant. tabloid! caught up with them for an exclusive chat in London while they were still beaming from their success.
How does it feel to sweep the Best Debutant Awards this year including the latest Zee Cine Award?
Kapoor: It feels great to be appreciated and win these awards as I feel the two years of hard work that I put in has finally paid off. I have to be grateful to Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the entire team of Saawariya for making me look special in this film.
Padukone: It is great to win this award as it acknowledges that I have been accepted by the industry. I am thankful to Farah Khan for giving me such a wonderful role and Shah Rukh Khan for giving me the opportunity to star opposite him. In fact, the entire team of Om Shanti Om played a crucial part in me receiving the award.
How does it feel to receive such a tremendous response in London?
Kapoor: It has been a special and memorable evening as this is my first overseas award. The best part is that most of my family members were present when I received the award in London. I love the atmosphere of London and the awards function was like a rock show.
Padukone: It has an overwhelming experience to receive this award in front of such an exciting audience and the entire Bollywood fraternity. I am definitely having a memorable experience in London.
How do you plan to celebrate together on winning these awards?
Kapoor: I think there will be a big celebration that will not only involve us but the entire Bollywood fraternity as all are happy and it has been a big night for all of us.
Padukone: We haven't made any plans yet, but definitely I will go with the flow.
After winning the Best Debutant awards, what are your next goals?
Kapoor: Well I will strive to work hard so that I am able to secure a nomination in the best actor category next year.
Padukone: I have couple of films in the pipeline and the roles are different from the one I did in Om Shanti Om. Let's hope for the best in future.
What are your forthcoming projects?
Kapoor: I have just completed Siddharth Anand's Bachna Ae Haseeno that is produced by Yashraj Films. The film co-stars Deepika, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba and has shaped up well. We are looking for an August release.
Padukone: I have couple of films lined up for this year. For starters, I have Bachna Ae Haseeno with Ranbir, which is a love story, and later I have Chandni Chowk to China with Akshay Kumar. That one is directed by Nikhil Advani and is an action comedy.
Finally, if you were to choose a holiday destination for just the two of you, where would you go?
Kapoor: It would probably be New York as that's the city I lived in during my education and I would love to visit the place with Deepika.
Padukone: It would have to be southern France which is really lovely, amazing and stunningly beautiful.
