Katrina Halili lands biggest break

Seems like 2008 is becoming the year of remakes. After Totoy Bato, another film classic is being remade, though in the same film format. Miss X, which previously starred Vilma Santos, will be re-produced and re-shown this time with Katrina Halili in the lead role.

This is Katrina's biggest break so far, after her breakthrough performance in Magdusa Ka, where she got her leading role for the very first time.

Octo Arts Films bought the rights for the remake of the classic Vilma Santos movie and Orly Ilacad (Head of Octo Arts Films) signed Katrina up to play the role that turned Vilma into a serious actor.

Aside from Miss X, Katrina is also doing the Metro Manila Film Fest 2008 entry One Night Only together with sexy stars Roxanne Guinoo, Angelica Panganiban and Valerie Concepcion as her supporting cast.

Katrina is set to commence taping for Miss X beginning October. Miss X is scheduled for a theatre in February 2009.

No love lost

When Robin Padilla's fantasy action TV series ended recently, many of his fans feared he may not have another programme after rumours spread that the action star was disliked by the crew on the set. It's very likely that the staff detested Robin because of his meticulousness when it comes to playing his roles. It is often said he even meddles with the director's instructions and approach, and will not stop until a scene is completed to his liking.

So when his latest starrer Joaquin Bordado aired its last episode and concluded its run on a high note, constantly rating second behind perennial top-rater Dyesebel, a lot of his fans sent e-mails to showbiz reporters, including this writer, asking whether Robin will have another project. They fear the production crew may have sent wrong feelers and feedback to network executives.

For a while, it looked like Robin's career would be in limbo, but a perfectly-timed announcement last week said he is off to Australia to train and gain additional weight for his next project entitled Totoy Bato — a remake and TV adaptation of a film previously done by the King of Philippine Movies, the late Fernando Poe, Jr.

Robin is coming back on screen, and he is doing so in a "big" way — in addition to the additional pounds, he is also set to co-star with international sports celebrity Manny Pacquiao.

Looks like there isn't any love lost between Robin and his former programme's crew, who have more or less signed up for the action star's new assignment.

From failure to stardom

When the all-female dance group Sexbomb embarked on an acting career via their Daisy Siete soap series, many people predicted they would not even last one season.

But the feisty and amiable dance group proved all their detractors wrong, when they announced their afternoon soap has now began its 19th season on air — a far cry from several seasons back when they were written off before their programme was even aired on TV.

Their newest drama series, entitled Vaklushi, is a tale of two entertainment fans whose admiration for an upcoming rap star pulls them into the world of drag queens and danger.
When Cebuanas Mia and Sunshine find out that their idol Rochelle will hold a concert in their city, they promise themselves that they will do anything to meet her.

Rochelle is somebody that the two fans dream to emulate: a performer good enough to rival the talented yet conceited diva Yvette.
