In the trance world, German duo Cosmic Gate, consisting of producers Nic Chagall and Bossi, are recognisable names. Known for their progressive sound, the duo, who burst into the music scene in 1999 with their single The Drums and 2001 hit Fire Wire have performed at some of the world’s biggest clubs, including Ministry Of Sound in London and Privilege in Ibiza.

This Thursday, they have their eyes set on Dubai. Cosmic Gate will take over the DJ decks of Domeland, Chi @ The Lodge. Ahead of their gig, Soundbites caught up with the duo to talk music and discuss if trance is on its way out...

Q: Tell us about your gig this Thursday?

A: After our big show in one of Europe’s best clubs, Ministry of Sound in London, we will head to Dubai. Our plan is play an extended three-hour set. We are hoping to see some good crowds and some great energy. Trust us, we will rock the super sound system to the max.

Q: Is this your first time to the Middle East?

A: It’s not our first time. We have played in many countries in the Middle East but in the last two years we have scaled down on gigs there. So we are are excited to be be back. Plus, we can’t wait to see the ever-evolving change in the skyline of Dubai.

Q: How would you de-mystify the world of trance to all those who are critical of your music?

A: Many people who say that trance is not their thing are perhaps speaking based on their impression of what trance music sounded like many years ago. They have not been following the changes that have come around and how modern it sounds now. Cosmic Gate is considered trance, but our music is anything but old-fashioned. It’s sexy and funky. So give us a listen to get an idea of how modern trance and club music sounds in 2013. Swing by and have a good time with us.

Q: There’s a popular belief that trance music can sound monotonous and is nowadays lacking in creativity. How would you respond to that?

A: Music taste is always very personal, but we do not agree with this popular belief. Trance parties are still considered the biggest shows in the world. Trance can never be boring.

Q: Since you work as a pair, how do you work together?

A: Nowadays we have begun working on our music while on the road. The vibe is different to the days of working together in a studio.

Q: You have collaborated with the likes of Tiesto and Ferry Corsten. Tell us about the experience and in future what associations should we watch out for?

A: We had the pleasure working with many big names in the music scene. It’s always interesting to add another DJ/producer into the team because our spectrum of music gets wider. For our next album, we are hoping to collaborate with some big names but it’s too early to mention names.

Q: Who has been your biggest inspirations in the world of music and why?

A: We cannot pinpoint one group or an individual. Music, in general, has been a big influence in our lives. We are open when it comes to our tastes but Electronic Music is on the top our list. We grew up with various influences ranging from classical music to pop. All of that comes into play when we play our DJ sets.
