Mahindra plans pickup facility in US

New Delhi: Indian auto maker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. plans to assemble and sell thousands of light pickup trucks annually in the US by 2010, a top executive said yesterday.
The auto maker also is aiming at selling in the US sport utility vehicles sent as whole vehicles from India, said Pawan Goenka, president of the company's auto services. The company will send "semi-knock-down" kits for the light pickups from India to the US, Goenka said. "We are looking at the possibility of assembling pickup trucks in the US through a contract manufacturer by 2010," Goenka said.
Goenka declined to identify the US contract manufacturer as the company was still holding talks with it. He also would not be specific about sales targets.
Mahindra has a partnership with Atlanta, Georgia-based Global Vehicles, which will distribute the vehicles and manage a network of US dealers, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
