- Men are increasingly relying on the surgeon's knife to get the perfect face and body.
Description: The FUE Method of Hair Transplantation, explains Anisa Vrabac, operations manager at the Hair Transplant department of Dubai Cosmetic Surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure which leaves no visible scars. Step one, she says, involves a detailed consultation with the patient about the area to be treated and this is marked accordingly. "In step two, the hair is cut short and local anaesthesia is applied," she says. "Next is the harvesting, which is essentially the mechanical (automated) removal of individual hair grafts from the back of the head which are then properly placed and dissected into micro grafts to be used when required." In the final step small incisions are made in the areas where the grafts will be placed. "These grafts are simply placed in their correct positions one by one until the entire area has been filled with hair," she says, adding this can take between three to 12 hours.
Downtime: No pain, only mild swelling which subsides within a few days. The patient may return to work within one or two days.
Results: Results can be seen immediately and final results will be obvious within six months. "Since the hair from the back of the head is genetically programmed differently from the hair at the top of the head, it is expected to be permanent and never fall out," she says.
Price: Depending on the number of grafts used, between Dh15,000 to Dh40,000

Blepharoplasty (eyelid/eye bag surgery)
Description: For the upper eyelid, excess skin is removed, creating a more youthful eyelid fold, while for puffy eye bags, a small incision is made on the lower eyelid on the lash line, and the excess protruding fat is removed. The procedure takes up to two hours and is performed under sedation.
Downtime: Stitches are removed after four days and most patients take one week off from work to recover from some swelling and bruising.
Results: "This surgery is extremely popular because it refreshes ‘tired eyes', making them look more youthful," Dr Viel says, as it takes the heaviness away from the upper eyelid. When eye bags are removed, eyes look much more open.
Price: From Dh19,000

Botox
Description: In this 15-minute treatment, Botox is injected into the muscles that control certain facial expressions and cause unflattering lines, such as the muscles around the eyes that make crow's feet, says Dr Viel. "To alleviate the lines caused by repetitive movements such as squinting and frowning, we stop the muscles or weaken their movement with the use of Botox."
Downtime: There is tolerable pain.
Results: The results will be apparent after three to five days and include fewer lines and wrinkles on the face, creating a smoother and more youthful look.
Price: Dh1,400 for one area; Dh1,800 for two areas such as forehead and eyes

MACS facelift
Description: According to Dr Maurizio Viel, plastic surgeon at the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery (LCAS), this two-to-three-hour procedure is performed under sedation and lifts the lower two-thirds of the face vertically, creating a natural look, with most of the incisions hidden in the hairline.
Downtime: Most patients take a week off from work and must wear a compression garment around the face for three to four days; stitches are removed after one week.
Results: The patient looks refreshed; youthful contours are visible again - the jawline looks more defined and the sagging cheeks are no longer there.
Price: Dh40,000

Gynaecomastia surgery
Description: Used to correct ‘man boobs' and performed under local anaesthetic, this procedure involves a small incision being made and fat in the breast area being removed by liposuction. Another small incision can be made below the nipple to remove the gland. Sometimes there is a large amount of breast tissue with excess skin that requires a bigger procedure to remove the gland and skin and the scar will be around the areola area.
Downtime: Two to three days off work; patients must avoid exercising for two weeks and wear a compression garment for three weeks. Pain medication is required for a few days.
Results: Breast-removal results in a more contoured chest.
Price: Dh12,000 to Dh18,000

Pectoral and biceps augmentation
Description: Performed under general anaesthesia in approximately 90 minutes, Dr Sanjay Parashar, specialist plastic surgeon and director at Cocoona Centre for Aesthetic Transformation, explains that a cut is made in the underarm area and a space is created under the pectoral muscle for pectoral augmentation and under the biceps muscle for biceps augmentation. "Then a custom-sized silicone implant is inserted under the muscle to enhance its size and definition," he says.
Downtime: The patient must rest for five to six days and avoid exercise for four weeks. Also pain medications will be required for four to five days and the patient must wear a compression garment for approximately three weeks.
Result: Enhanced and augmented chest and biceps muscles.
Price: Dh28,000 to Dh32,000

High definition liposculpture
Description: Extra fat is removed from the tummy and waistline to create a nice abdominal silhouette and enhance the underlying muscle which will create a six-pack that is otherwise covered by a layer of fat, says Dr Parashar. "The procedure takes up to one-and-a-half hours and requires local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia," he says.
Downtime: The patient will need two days of rest and ten days off exercise. Pain medication is needed for three to four days and the patient must wear a compression garment for approximately three weeks.
Results: A V-shaped waistline along with muscle definition in the tummy and six-packs in individuals with good muscle tone.
Price: Dh20,000 to Dh35,000

Penile Enlargement
Description: "In this two-hour procedure performed under sedation, fat is harvested from another part of the body - usually the abdomen - and is prepared before the surgeon injects this into the penis which will increase the girth," explains Dr Viel.
Downtime: No exercise for one week in the case of girth enlargement; or one month in the case of lengthening. No sexual intercourse for three to four weeks. The patient can return to work after one week.
Results: An increase of the girth/circumference from the additional fat that has been added between the skin and the muscle of the penis. The result of lengthening is that the penis hangs longer when flaccid although this makes no difference to the length when erect.
Price: Enlargement Dh24,500; lengthening Dh26,600
