Nokia’s X factor?

During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia unveiled five new affordable handsets, including the Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL that run Android apps and Asha 230 and Nokia 220 to capture the fast-growing affordable smartphone market. However there is some concern whether this will eat into the Asha line up or even the low–end Lumia phones. XPRESS spoke to Vithesh Reddy of Nokia. Excerpts from an interview.

Is it an Android phone?

The Nokia X runs on Nokia X Software Platform, which is built on the standard Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack - 4.1.2 release of AOSP. The Nokia X family runs Android Apps, features Nokia’s renowned handset quality and design, with a fresh, tile-based user interface inspired our Lumia family and is embedded with Microsoft services.

What happens to the Asha line up now?

With the introduction of the Nokia Asha 230, we continue to bring Asha to even more affordable price points. The X family target a different customer to that of Asha and Lumia, therefore all product families will co-exist.

How is Lumia performing?

Windows Phone is the fastest-growing operating system in the world, and Lumia has gone from a standing start to more than 10 per cent share in several markets. Lumia will continue to deliver a differentiated experience through our design, Nokia innovations like imaging and the Windows Phone operating system.

How many X phones are being launched in the UAE?

The first device, the Nokia X. The Nokia X+ is optimised for games, music, photos and video with more storage. The Nokia XL, boasts a 5” display with 2MP front-facing camera and a 5MP rear-facing, autofocus camera with flash.

The entire X family is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core processor and supports dual SIM. The X+ and XL will be available in the UAE in Q2.
