Focus on seating...

"The most common entertaining errors are over-catering and not having enough seating! When hosting, people tend to think about food more than any other element. This is not a bad thing - they will most likely end up with leftovers. However, not enough thought is given to having enough of the correct seating. Seating arrangements set the tone of the party. Are you going for a casual atmosphere? Then have seats spread out sparingly or even bean bags. If it's a formal setting, the chairs should be aligned accordingly."

Tick it off...

"Always have a checklist and a timeline of what you need to do and when - as basic as it sounds, it really helps. It's especially useful when a lot of things are left to the last minute, so you don't forget anything. From food, to required shopping, music, lights, decorations... Check it off as you go along to prevent any last-minute panics."

Be flexible...

"You may have the perfect party plan in your head, but if your guests don't enjoy themselves, what's the point? Adjust things at the party according to how the party is unfolding. A hungry crowd is never a pleasant sight."

Serve little nibbles...

"I prefer finger food to standing with plates. Where do you place the empty plate? Do you get a clean one if you want more? Finger food is so easy and no one can see how much you're eating!"

Theme it...

"The traditional red and green theme is good for Christmas spirit - just don't get too tacky. Be creative... An all-white theme, or silver and blue, will still feel Christmasy and look fantastic if done well. You don't need to spend a lot of money for a great event, just be creative."

Set the scene...

"My top three tips for creating a party atmosphere are music, lighting and welcome drinks. For music, the correct playlist and volume makes a big difference. Christmas music is fine for the beginning of a party but not for the whole night and the playlist should not be repeated more than twice. Set the right lighting tone and even bring in some coloured lights to set the mood. Offer welcome drinks on arrival - it makes guests feel instantly more comfortable."

Start early...

"With so many events and parties happening at this time of year, people book their schedules far in advance. Send out your invitations early, with at least three weeks notice, and send reminders as you get closer to the date.

"State dress code and food on the invitation so your guests know in advance. If you deliver only snacks and people are expecting a meal, it's not a good outcome."
