If you are gearing up for the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon scheduled for next month, you need to train smart.
Two-time winner of the Abu Dhabi Adventure Challenge (being held from December 4-9, www.abudhabi-adventure.com), Elina Mäki-Rautila, shares some tips on preparing for an endurance event:
- Start training at least a month before the event, and if you aren't sure about how you should be training, seek professional advice from a personal trainer.
- Work out a diet plan that will help build up energy and aid faster recovery. It's a good idea to try out a few different energy drinks and bars weeks beforehand so you know what suits you best.
- Have a massage when your muscles start feeling too tired or tense (ideally once every two weeks).
- Focus on improving your skills and techniques - good technique makes you go faster!
- Formulate a tactical plan for the race. If you're participating as a team, you need to train together a few times, and plan the best way to operate as a group.
