Q: How do I downgrade to Windows XP from Vista?

- Anonymous, Egypt

A: Downgrading to XP isn't a simple process, but for anyone who needs XP or simply doesn't want Vista, here is how it works:

1.Who can downgrade? If you bought a computer with Vista Professional or Vista Ultimate already installed (OEM), you can downgrade to XP Professional, which includes the Tabletop PC and x64 editions. If you bought Vista from a retailer or if your computer came with the Vista home edition, you cannot downgrade.

2You will need a copy of the XP Professional install disk, including the product code, and your Vista registration number. Any copy of XP Professional will do, even one borrowed from a friend. This isn't pirating. Your Vista registration number, which came with your computers, allows you to legally use the software.

3Before you start any install-ation, make a backup of all pertinent information, ie pictures, documents, spreadsheets, music files and anything else you don't want to lose. Install processes can vary, but it's likely your hard drive will be reformatted, erasing any data. Also make sure you have a copy of all your hardware drivers too, since these also will need to be reinstalled.

4Also make sure you have Microsoft's support number, +97143917000. You can get the support number in other countries by visiting support.Microsoft.com. If you experience problems installing the software, the computer's manufacturer may not help you.

5Install XP to your computer. Near the end of the installation, you will be prompted to register the software. Do not register the software online. Instead, opt to register by telephone. When you talk to the customer service representative, tell them you are downgrading to XP from Vista and give them the Vista registration code. The rep is then supposed to talk you through the rest.
