The British Council has launched an online contest that offers people of all ages living in the UAE a chance to learn English in the UK.

Those interested in taking part must access www.letyourenglishgrow.org, select the course they wish to apply for and answer a simple question.

The contest, which is being conducted for the second year, closes on September 30. It is being run in association with English UK, a British national association of accredited English language centres, in Thailand, Brazil and Turkey besides the UAE.

Particpants can choose from a wide range of English language courses at a number of institutions. Each institution is officially accredited by the British Council and English UK.

Helpful course

Amran Mohammad Ali Al Shehi, a winner from the Let Your English Grow contest in 2007, studied English for a week at Winchester School for English.

Asked why he entered the contest, Al Shehi said: "I entered this programme to improve my English in the home of the language and to prepare to pass the IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) exam to start my masters programme. I have learnt some skills that will help me in life, and I think this kind of training course should help people. My impression of London is that I love it and will absolutely go again in the future, even though it is a little expensive!"

Alison Devine, deputy director of the British Council, UAE, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to study English in the UK and sample the varied delights that living and studying in UK provides. We have centres in places as diverse as Edinburgh, Oxford, Chester, Bath, Brighton, Manchester and London but all have the common theme of being excellent places to learn English. The winners will be placed all over the country and will be able to enjoy the experiences living in different areas."

Last year, 14,400 students entered the competition with 241 students emerging winners. Around 400 of the entrants and almost 40 of the winners were from the UAE.
