If ‘unstoppable’ was a word for a blockbuster film, it would befittingly describe the box office status of Punjab Nahi Jaungi (PNJ), last year’s most successful film, that is creating one record after another. A love story between people of ‘two states’ — Punjab and Sindh — the film came out on the eve of Eid Al Adha 2017, and has been showing in theatres across Pakistan since, whereas the other simultaneous release, Na Maloom Afraad 2, exhausted its run months ago. Interestingly, most of the later releases — including ‘biggies’ like Arth — The Destination and Rangreza — which were expected to do well, also delivered a turkey at the ticket windows and had vanished even before you knew it. PNJ’s initial collections had the film pundits predicting a decent business but not many knew it would become the country’s first feature to have grossed PKR 50 crores. This makes PNJ Pakistan’s highest grosser of all times. Its makers — Jerjees Seja (of ARY Network), actor-producer Humayun Saeed, and director Nadeem Baig — can’t stop rejoicing; they have broken their own previous record of producing the most successful film (2015’s Jawani Phir Nahi Ani).
