Gauri Khan on Friday unveiled a collection of saris for design label Satya Paul.

The interior designer — wife of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan — presented her third collection for the label, titled Cocktails and Dreams — inspired by classic drinks.

“The collection is my third collection with Satya Paul... When we design the collection the first thing we keep in mind is what occasion this particular sari we are designing is for. This collection is more evening wear and keeping that in mind the colours are very vibrant... loads of reds, yellows and brighter tones,” she said.

In satin, georgette and flat silks, the designs feature laser cutting and foiling, with lace, dori and resham embroidery.

Khan says she chose to design a range of saris as it’s what she feels most comfortable in.

“Be it a movie premiere or an event, I personally prefer to wear a lot of saris. For me they are very comfortable; I can carry them off. They are very feminine... as a designer I feel I should promote saris,” Khan added.

The collection is the final edition of three lines designed by Khan, commemorating the label’s 30th anniversary in the Indian fashion industry. The collection also includes a range of scarves, ties, pocket squares, bags and clutches. This season, Satya Paul has expanded its accessories section with a larger collection of metallic clutches, printed totes, slouchy slings, messenger and oversized bags.

Nikhil Mehra, COO of Genesis Colors, Satya Paul’s holding company, hopes to collaborate with Khan again.

“I am excited. It is a great product. It is good for the consumers. Life is all about collaborating again and again,” Mehra said.

Khan’s interest in designing started after she worked on the interiors of her home in Mumbai.

“I was an art student. I did graphic design. Being an artist, I did a lot of paintings. I have always had that creative side to me. When I started building my home in Mumbai, I was working with the architect very closely.

“I realised I was very inclined and interested in designing and learned a lot from him. That’s when it all began. I felt very passionate about it and now it has been around four years [since I started],” she said.

For Khan, inspiration for her work is everywhere.

“When I travel to any country, be it Paris or London, while walking on the streets, the architecture, the restaurants all inspire me. Inspiration for design could be anywhere,” she said.

The designer added that her family is supportive of her career.

“Shah Rukh is very supportive of my work. Not only him but my kids also support me. They do come to my store, look into every piece that I have designed and I am doing. They are very involved and totally support me.”
