Stylish affair

Day two of Dubai Fashion 2008 presented a sneak peek at the hottest trends for spring-summer 2008.
For lovers of style, the second day of Dubai Fashion was a rare feast. The show presented by Etoile La Boutique, featured not one or two designers but over a dozen fashion labels available at the boutique.
These included famous names such as Azzedine Alia, Christian Dior, John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, Ungaro, Valentino, Stella Cadente and Michel Klein as a well as younger designers, who are creating a buzz on the international fashion scene, such as Gai Mattiolo and Lie Sang Bong.
The wide range of garments and accessories displayed on the ramp gave Dubai's fashionistas a complete overview of the hottest trends for spring-summer 2008. Designers Michel Klein and Stanislasia Klein of Stella Cadente were present at the show.
Luxurious
Celebrity French choreographer Bernard Trucks recreated the luxurious ambience of the Jacques Garcia designed Etoile boutique by placing the easily recognisable oversize couch, leather framed mirror and satin pouf from the boutique on the ramp.
The models lounged lazily on the couch, preened themselves in front of the mirror and whispered little secrets into each other's ears giving the audience the intimate feel of stepping into the boudoir of a woman who is having an affair — with fashion.
Signatures
With the designers' names not being announced when their collections were on the ramp it was difficult to keep track of every garment and accessory exhibited at the show.
But some signatures were unmistakable such as Valentino's red gowns and his beautiful cord work and appliqué embellished pale pink gowns for next season, Ungaro's sleekly draped and sari inspired gowns and Galliano's frilly dresses in shades of pink and his modern version of the flapper dress.
We loved Stella Cadente's colourful, funky accessories and fur-trimmed animal print dresses worn with gold leggings and Michel Klein's printed dresses embellished with shell embroidery.
Gai Mattiolo's fitted gowns and dresses in black and gold and black and silver were stylish. And Lei Sang Bong's exotic gowns and dresses embellished with fabric circles and Chinese lantern-inspired sleeves managed to grab attention amid so many established names.
The show ended dramatically with a loud burst and a shower of gold confetti on the ramp and on the entire audience.
Trends to watch out for
From the collections we have seen so far at Dubai Fashion 2008, next season will have lots of colourful floral prints and a palette dominated by gold, silver, black and white. Some of the key spring-summer 2008 trends that emerged from the show are:
- Metallic accessories and fabrics.
- Citrus tones of yellow and orange and all shades of pink.
- Monochromes accented with contrasting textures and black prints.
- Contemporary twists to 1950's shapes.
- Origami shapes.
- Feminine bows, frills, tassels and charms with bright colourful detailing.
- Comfortable shift dresses.
- Voluminous sleeves on fitted dresses and jackets.
- Exotic embroideries.
- Soft floaty sheer fabrics contrasted with leather and suede.
- Bright, colourful, chunky plastic bangles and coloured crystal accessories.
