Dubai: Life in Al Rashidiya - one of the early residential areas in Dubai, will change drastically when the Dubai Metro's Red Line becomes operational on September 9.

The location of the Al Rashidiya Metro, on the Dubai Airport Road going towards Mirdif, is ideal because it is close to various public and private facilities. Al Rashidiya is located on the eastern side of Dubai and mainly comprises old residential villas. It offers affordable housing and there are hardly any parking or traffic problems.

Right next to the Metro station is Al Rashidiya Park which is frequented by hundreds of people every day. Just outside the park gates is Al Rashidiya Bus and Taxi Stand which offers a public transport service to the areas not served by the Metro.

The area is expected to receive thousands of visitors every day because the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has built a huge car park next to the station to offer a 'park and ride' facility for Metro users. It will have a capacity of 2,700 cars. The station will serve passengers coming from Nad Al Hamar, Mirdif, Muhaisna, Sharjah and Ajman. They can park their cars at the station and take the train.

Just outside the station is a fast food store, grocery stores, a laundry, barber's shop, beauty salon and small supermarkets. At least two mosques are also only five minutes walk away.

For book lovers, Dubai Municipality's public library is just five minutes walk from the station and next to the library is Dubai Health Centre, Al Rashidiya.

The police station is just six to eight minutes walk and close to it are Dewa and Empost offices.

Al Rashidiya Central Market, the Union Cooperative Store and Bin Souqat Shopping Mall are located just six to ten minutes walk from the station, which can accommodate 11,000 passengers an hour in each direction. A Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) office is also located within 10 minutes walk from the station.

Do you know?

The amount of concrete used to build the Dubai Metro is 2.5 million cubic metres. This includes the construction of piers, viaducts, stations and tunnelling work.
