The plot The main thing you will take away from watching this film is further and completely conclusive evidence that Meryl Streep is brilliant - although you probably already knew that.

Her performance as Margaret Thatcher, who was the first female British Prime Minister from 1979-1990, is so breathtakingly true-to-life that she elevates an otherwise dull biopic into a film to watch - every moment she's on screen is an arresting one.

Telling the story of this controversial yet pioneering conservative politician, the film jumps from era to era, showing a young Maggie working at her dad's grocery store and falling in love with her husband Denis; the Thatcher of the '80s - the woman who had elocution lessons to speak with more authority (i.e. more masculinity) dealt with adversaries and a failing personal life and finally, the elderly Thatcher, whose life is blighted by dementia.

Successfully showing the price she paid for her power, overall it lacks the punch and complexity its subject was so famous for.
