Ricki and The Flash
Meryl Streep can do no wrong in our eyes. Even dressed as an aging rocker, she pulls off the look and the role of a mum who’s not wanted anymore. Ricki (Streep) leaves her family in the ‘80s to become a rock star, so dad Pete (Kevin Kline) is left at home to build the family. When things in the household start going wrong, Pete calls Ricky to come and sort things out. Now as you can imagine, a mother who abandons her family isn’t welcomed back with open arms so it takes a while for them to warm to her again. What secret is Ricki hiding? Will the kids find out?
Neil Young taught Meryl Streep to play guitar for this role and watching this film you’d think she’d been playing all her life. It’s definitely a feel-good film with a lot of stars (Rick Springfield is in it) and a lot of love.
A Walk In The Woods
Remember the Oscar-nominated film Wild that was out last year starring Reese Witherspoon? Well, there’s another film based on a similar trek, only this time, it’s with two old guys. The walk is the Appalachian Trail and it’s a pretty hefty 3,500 km hiking trail in North America.
This film is based on a true story that was later turned into the book of the same name. When writer Bill Bryson (played by Robert Redford) moves back the USA from the UK he decides to re-connect with his old mate Stephen and have one big adventure before it’s too late... so they do this trek.
This film is full of laughs and sentiment with some big co-stars too. Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen and Nick Nolte play a major role in making this one of the best options this weekend.
The Games Maker
Think it’s time for a new version of Harry Potter? I’d say so. This film is nowhere near as good as what JK Rowling created, but it’s on the same level. Ivan is a young boy who wants to make board games, and when a tattoo appears on his arm he’s not sure how it got there. He’s transported to a boarding school with other orphans who can’t seem to escape. He wants to find his parents but he’s going to need a lot of help to do so. Released late last year, this film sees the welcome return of Ralph Fiennes; the young actor David Mazouz deserves a mention as the lead Ivan. We predict big things for this young star.
Still showing: We Are Your Friends
If you’re into dance, house, trance or any kind of music that involves a guy with a laptop, you’ll love this film. Probably the best thing Zac Efron has done since he came soaring into our worlds with High School Musical. He plays Cole Carter, a DJ who wants to be the next best thing. He struggles to get his big break and when he does, will he ditch his friends? Will he actually make it? This film is perfect for kids who need a bit of direction, as it’s all about having a life goal and working as hard as you can to fulfil your dreams.
