Superhero sequel X-Men: Apocalypse debuted as the top movie at North American box-offices this Memorial day weekend with ticket sales of $65 million (Dh238.68 million), industry figures showed on Sunday.
In the United States, the three-day holiday weekend — the unofficial start of summer — is popular with moviegoers, and cinemas generally do a booming business, although box office watchers remarked that ticket sales this year have been uncharacteristically light.
Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass opened in the number two spot, selling $28.1 million in tickets.
The Angry Birds Movie was third with $18.7 million.
Another comic book-themed flick, Captain America: Civil War, was fourth with $15.1 million, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.
Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising, grossed $9.1 million for fifth place.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
The Jungle Book ($6.9 million)
The Nice Guys ($6.3 million)
Money Monster ($4.2 million)
Love and Friendship ($2.5 million)
Zootopia ($831,000)
