July’s around the corner already and while we yet again contemplate how time seems to be passing us by at record-breaking speed, ‘Podcast Post’ brings to you five podcasts that have truly had us gripped this first-half of 2017. Happy listening, folks.
Reading Glasses
Designed for book nerds, Reading Glasses helps you get more out of your reading time. Every week, hosts Brea Grant and Mallory O’Meara hold lively half-hour discussions on tips and tricks for integrating reading into a busy lifestyle, whether you’re a casual reader or someone who prefers the company of the written word over regular social interaction. From learning how to organise your bookshelves to conquering your ‘To Read’ list and reviews of books (and all kinds of books: romance, science-fiction, literature, comic books and the like) and reading gadgets, Reading Glasses is your new ultimate resource on literary experiences. Only three episodes are out so far, so the podcast will be a breeze to catch up with.
Pitch Makeover
This one’s for all the budding CEOs out there. Combining the podcast wizardry of Gina Delvac (host of the extremely entertaining news podcast, Call Your Girlfriend) and start-up market knowledge of Natalia Oberti Noguera (founder and CEO of Pipeline Angels, a network of women angel investors), Pitch Makeover aims to help entrepreneurs (especially women and POC entrepreneurs) to polish their business ideas, making them market ready. Every week, entrepreneurs pitch their ideas, the hosts discuss and then suggest meaningful edits to the pitch. Season one has eight episodes so far.
Invisibilia
In its third season now, hit NPR show Invisibilia is only moving on to bigger and better things. About the invisible forces that govern everyday life — thoughts, feelings, expectations, assumptions, cultural norms, the podcast has set itself a seemingly impossible task: to unravel the political and cultural chaos that the world has suddenly found itself in this year. While the context pertains mostly to the US, the lessons are universal. The first episode of season three is titled Emotions and is about anthropologist Renato Rosaldo who has managed to discover a new emotion: liget. Season three includes seven episodes so far.
Rookie
From the makers of Rookie, the hit online magazine and newsletter for teenagers (and by teenagers), comes the brand new eponymous podcast, sure to lure in every kid from New York to New Delhi. Hosted by editor Tavi Gevinson, the podcast has so far included interviews with the likes of singer Lorde, actresses Winona Ryder and Alia Shawkat and author George Saunders, among others. The podcast also makes sure to spotlight the work of Rookie readers (and listeners) as well as, contributors. Our favourite segment, however, is ‘Ask a Grown’, where each week’s celebrity guest answers life questions sent in by Rookie listeners. Season one has twelve episodes so far.
On She Goes
Aminatou Sow (again from the Call Your Girlfriend podcast) hosts another show aimed at empowering women (especially women of colour). On She Goes focuses on travel stories and advice for women of colour, in order to equip them with tools that will ultimately set them free. Whether its business travel or travelling for pleasure, immigration or family visits, On She Goes is already turning a central hub for finding your sense of adventure. Season one has four episodes out so far.
