DUBAI: What makes this Dubai eatery unique in the UAE’s culinary landscape is one plain fact: It’s the only one in the country to have made it to The Diners Club World’s 50 best restaurants. Located at Dubai Marina and overlooking the panoramic views of the waterfront, Marina Social bagged the distinction – considred the Oscars of the restaurant world – last month.
Marina Social which serves British-Italian cuisine is the brain child of British chef Jason Atherton who describes the place as a “deformalised dining”. I visited the place recently to get a first hand account. The ambience and interiors seemed odd yet catchy.
The serving plates, for instance, had images of human skulls engraved on them, and that just made the experience intriguing. For starters, I picked the ‘social dog’ duck and the goat cheese ‘churros’ with truffle honey. The two dishes are among the restaurant’s best sellers but my favourite was the duck since the sweet taste of honey with cheese didn’t impress my palate. On the other hand, my partner thought the reverse, so I guess it boils down to personal preference.
For the mains, I opted for poached cod served in lemon butter sauce and slow cooked egg served with hollandaise foam and black garlic.
If you love novelty, you will love the cod. Besides making a lasting imprint on the taste buds, the dish won me over with its innovative presentation. Compared to it the egg dish was a rather simple affair.
For dessert, I settled for the sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch. It was definitely one of the best I’ve had in Dubai. The flavours of toffee, soufflé and butterscotch blended like a rainbow.
The attendant insisted we also try the social gelato. It was a tower of 12 different flavours and came with a play card to tick each one off as you tasted them. This might sound easy, but finding lemon grass off similar tasting gelatos was quite a challenge. And totally worth it!
