Real life stories always fascinate, especially when they are centred around the life of a policeman.

Tamil director H. Vinoth, who made his debut with the heist story Sathuranga Vettai, is back with Theeran Adhigaram Ondru, with Karthi playing the titular role of the police officer investigating a case.

Vinoth first came across this story in a newspaper in 2005, when he was working as an assistant director. The same story came back to him a few years later, prompting him to make a film on it. During his meeting with police officers to research his film, Vinoth admitted he was impressed by their commitment.

“Until then I had a negative opinion about the police force,” he said. “[But] the officers I met were honest and a dedicated lot.”

Vinoth also realised the enormous responsibility he was taking on to narrate a real investigative story. The film is set between 1995-2005, which meant the makers had to find a shooting location that wasn’t too modern. Their search finally took them to Rajasthan and Gujarat, said Vinoth.

Working in extreme weather conditions in the deserts of Rajasthan and battling sandstorms that disrupted shoots were added hurdles.

Rakul Preet Singh, who plays Theeran’s wife, spoke about her character Priya, describing her as “a lazy kind of a brat” who was also “a fun-loving person.”

She continued: “Priya’s life revolves around her husband. People will remember the emotions of the couple and the way it has been shot. It’s also about how a cop balances his professional and personal life.”

Bose Venkat plays Theeran’s subordinate policeman.

Vinoth, calls himself an accidental director who took a while to find his groove. After assisting directors Raju Murugan and Vijay Milton, he went ahead with his solo venture, Sathuranga Vettai, which was well received.

Theeran Adhigaram Ondru, produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, releases in the UAE on November 16.
