Abu Dhabi: Latvia, which has assumed presidency of the European Union (EU), has opened an embassy in the UAE.

This means that 22 out of the 28 EU members states have embassies in the UAE.

‘’We have decided to make this a regional embassy to cover Gulf Cooperation Council countries. I am happy to be the first diplomat to represent my country in the UAE,’’ Rudolfs Bremanis, head of the Embassy of Latvia, said at an event in the capital on Wednesday evening.

Ahmad Al Jarman, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the guest of honour.

Latvian folk music trio ‘Zarbugans’ staged a special performance.

Carlo De Filippi, Ambassador of the European Union delegation, welcomed the gathering.

‘’The UAE is a strong partner and this is evident in the growing number of high level visits between both sides and this was made clear when the High Representative of the European Union opened a Delegation to the United Arab Emirates in the second half of 2013 as that serves as a testimony to the EU’s commitment to strengthen its cooperation with the UAE,” he said.
