Dubai: Labour companies are showing more compassion to outdoor workers during peak summer, reports by the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs (PCLA) in Dubai show.

This year, only 15 companies were found violating the government regulation, which forces companies to give a mid-day break for outdoor workers every year from June 15 to September 15.

The reports are based on a series of examinations; over 20,000 inspections were conducted in Bur Dubai alone.

The 2013 investigations revealed that over 50 companies did not abide by the government regulations, showing an increase in company’s compliance with the regulations this year.

As many as 20,176 companies and establishments in Bur Dubai were probed to ensure that the regulation is being implemented.

The PCLA, chaired by Major General Obaid Muhair Bin Surour, Deputy Director General of General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai, honoured five companies, seven labour accommodation sites and four committee employees for their distinguished services in implementing the mid-day break rule.

Speaking at the honouring ceremony held at the GDRFA-Dubai office in Al Aweer, Maj Gen Bin Surour thanked the companies for their compliance.

“The government remains committed to ensuring the compliance of the regulations governing workers’ rights and ensuring their health by following international best practices,” he said.

The PCLA also conducted an awareness campaign, distributing posters that highlight the mid-day break rule, workers’ rights and steps to implement the decision.

The honouring ceremony, Maj Gen Bin Surour said, will go a long way in strengthening the relationship between the companies and workers and further the spirit of cooperation and good work culture environment.

He added that the expected increase in workers’ numbers during Expo 2020 will pose a challenge for authorities to ensure workers’ rights are being protected.
