Thiruvananthapuram: Mystery continues to shroud the murder of a young madrasa teacher at Choori in Kerala’s northernmost district of Kasaragod earlier this week.
Mohammad Riyas Moulavi (30) was found hacked to death by an unidentified assailant or a group, on Tuesday. The moulavi had a retiring room at the old Juma Masjid at Choori where he was found dead.
The incident had sparked violence in the district, prompting the district administration to impose prohibitory orders. There is suspicion whether the murder was carried out to foment trouble in the locality.
Following the murder, the Indian Union Muslim League called for a daylong strike to protest the incident.
Since then, a special investigation team of the police has been formed and Kasaragod is slowly returning to normalcy.
A team led by the crime branch superintendent of police, A. Sreenivas carried out a preliminary investigation at the mosque, and police are also examining closed circuit television footage available with a few individuals near the mosque.
Initially, about 20 persons were taken into custody by police for questioning, but none of them appeared to be involved with the incident. No strong leads have emerged in the case so far.
The All India Imams’ Council has requested the government to investigate the suspected conspiracy behind the murder of Riyaz Moulavi. The madrasa teacher hailed from neighbouring Karnataka state.
