DUBAI There’s something about Dubai that has attracted the top tennis stars to not only come out and play, but also to find a place to stay. Ask Roger Federer and Jelena Jankovic, both former world No. 1 with residency here. The latter makes it a point to come to Dubai up to four times a year and did not miss the opportunity to interact with the public at Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa. XPRESS caught up with the former Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, US Open finalist and current world No. 14 for an interview. Following are the excerpts…

You are a Dubai resident. How do you like it here and how much fun is it to take part in activities like this?

I have so many great fans and I love playing in this part of the world. I love fashion and so shopping in the malls in Dubai is great. I love the weather, the people, food and beach at Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa. I loved playing tennis with and seeing the kids and helping them improve their skills to become future stars. It was a lot of fun, with a great turnout. It’s fabulous to see so many junior tennis enthusiasts.

You will be taking part in Champions Tennis League for Delhi next month. How much do you look forward to playing in that event?

It’s nice to play in India and promote myself in the country, and it’s great to be part of the Delhi team. It’s a fantastic event to promote tennis for fans and locals too.

You have had a quiet year with a few semis and quarters. How would you rate your 2014 season?

The beginning of the season was good, but then unfortunately I suffered with injuries, especially my back. I’m sad to say I haven’t produced the results I had hoped for. However, hopefully that will change soon!

As the most successful player for Serbia in Fed Cup, how much of a disappointment is it to see Serbia relegated to Europe/Africa zone group 1 for 2015?

I played the Fed Cup for 12 years and made progress throughout. I reached the final a few years ago which was amazing. I haven’t played since, which is a shame. Unfortunately they have dropped down in the league. I believe Serbia will be back in the big league soon with the great talent they have on board at present.

At 29, do you still nurture hopes of winning a Grand Slam title? Also, what goals have you set yourself for 2015?

I’m still young and have lots more to give to the game, you will see. I would like to be fittest and strongest I can be for 2015 and look forward to a successful season ahead.
