Shaikh Zayed Mosque: The grandest of them all
The Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque is UAE's largest mosque and the eighth largest in the world. In December an average 14,000 people visited the mosque daily. Some 40,000 people attended the Eid Al Adha prayers last November. A colossal 10-metre-wide, 15-metre-tall chandelier studded with thousands of Swarovski crystals dominates the main prayer room overlaid with the world's largest carpet. The 5,627 square metre work of art handmade in Iran by 1,200 weavers weighs 47 tonnes. Continuous recitation of the Quran emanates from a fenced-in structure near the north entrance of the mosque — the final resting place of Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Gulf News Staff Photographer Abdel-Krim Kallouche was recently entranced by the grandeur of the mosque.
