One of the world's leading industrial nations, Germany has a formidable reputation for manufacturing high quality engineering products. The highly competitive quality of German technology results from engineers with excellent education.

In an area of globalisation it is becoming increasingly important to make the excellent educational opportunities in Germany available to students from the Middle East. In this regard, one of the leading Technical Universities, the University of Karlsruhe (TH), offers English-taught engineering programmes for young students at the undergraduate level (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering) as well as five executive master programmes for young professionals in companies.

"My visit to Karlsruhe showed us an insight into the German innovation system and the country's high regard for research and development, which have led to various breakthrough innovations - such as those in the area of luxury cars, engines and other mechanical items," says Jenelle Al Ramahi, a Dubai resident whose son will attend the university this year.

The University of Karlsruhe or "Universität Karlsruhe (TH)" in Germany, founded in 1825, was Germany's first purely technical university. It provided the foundation for the systematic training of engineers. From an early date, Karlsruhe had a reputation for technology and research far beyond the frontiers of Germany. Either as students or teachers, a number of renowned scientists have made their contributions to technical progress in Karlsruhe, e.g. Carl Benz, pioneer of the automobile, or Heinrich Hertz, discoverer of electromagnetic waves.

Like other bachelor's programmes around the world, the International Bachelor programme in Mechanical Engineering takes four years. Unlike other programmes, the English-taught engineering courses offered are complemented by a series of German-taught interdisciplinary classes that include business administration and cultural issues. Additionally, multiple industrial internships are mandatory and an integral part of the programme.

The International Department has been founded by leading German industry partners, such as DaimlerChrysler, Bosch, Siemens and others. These industry partners provide internships, which are designed to teach students the complex interrelation of research and development, production, marketing and sales. As a result, students rapidly assimilate fundamental skills of importance, which qualifies them for future management positions in industry.

HECTOR School of Engineering and Management

The HECTOR School is known as the "executive product line" of the International Department of the University of Karlsruhe and provides five interdisciplinary executive master programmes in management of product development, production and operations management, financial engineering, information engineering and integrated circuit and system technology.

In this regard, the Young Arab Leaders (YAL), DaimlerChrysler AG and the University of Karlsruhe (TH) have agreed to establish cooperation by installing two scholarships for young professionals from the Middle East.

The goal of YAL is to improve the state of the Arab world by creating the necessary environment for future leaders to grow and develop across all sectors of Arab society.
