Abu Dhabi: A gang of 11 was arrested by Abu Dhabi Police in connection with the theft of luxury cars.

The suspects are Arab nationals and three of them are Emirati employees at government entities.

The stolen vehicles included nine Lamborghinis, besides Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan vehicles worth nearly Dh7 million.

Six of the stolen cars were registered in Abu Dhabi and three in Dubai.

The vehicles were traced and the suspects arrested.

“We received several reports about a group of people taking luxury cars on rent from car rental businesses and not returning them back after the due date,” said Colonel Ahmad Saif Bin Zaitoun Al Muhairi, director of Capital Police Directorate.

Investigation teams identified the first suspect, who admitted to collaborating with his partners, and then tracked down the other suspects, who detailed how they committed their crimes and the roles assigned to each one of them.

Major Musabah Al Katbi, director of Shaabiya police station, said that “a suspect would rent luxury cars from rental offices and then hand it over to his partner to forge the car registration documents. The suspect would then sell the vehicle to his victims without the inspection by the licensing authorities.”

The suspects have been charged with breach of trust and forgery of official documents with the purpose of earning illicit profit.
