Ras Al Khaimah: Golf clubs in Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman are offering Emirati students free lessons thanks to a tie-up between the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) and the Ministry of Education.
Starting this week, six national schools were introduced to the game, teeing off a four-week grassroots programme that will direct over 400 students towards development programmes and the UAE national team.
Al Zorah, Al Hamra and Tower Links golf clubs will host over 50 schoolchildren per week for the next month in a goal to identify and develop players.
“Students will be transported directly from schools to the golf clubs during their Physical Education classes,” said EGF general secretary Khalid Mubarak Al Shamsi. “Instead of playing the same sports, like football, basketball and rugby, they will have the opportunity to try golf.
“Our relationship with northern clubs and the Ministry of Education has been a focus for the national junior development programme over the past six months as the EGF feels that our national database is stronger in these areas.
“Over the next four weeks, these clubs will introduce the game to over 400 students. In return we expect a handful to take up the game,” he added.
John Frost, lead physical education trainer for the Ministry of Education, said: “It’s wonderful to see local children being introduced to the game of golf who may not necessarily have had the provision or opportunity to do so before.
“This project in conjunction with the EGF has already developed their skill set and confidence. For some, this could be their first step on a pathway to excellence, and for others, we hope it will instill a passion for lifelong learning in physical activity.”
