Sharjah: The police have arrested five men and recovered a number of fake Dh500 notes and 5,000 drug pills, an official said.

A senior police officer said the culprits used the fake currency to buy goods from stores in the emirate.

Lieutenant Colonel Ali Mohammad Ali Al Dhanhani, director of Criminal Investigation Department at Eastern Region Police, said the officers received a tip off about the Pakistani suspects promoting drugs and using fake dirham notes.

While police verified information, they received a call from a restaurant owner saying that a man paid in fake Dh500 notes for meals he ordered from the restaurant in Khor Fakkan.

The suspect was held by restaurant employees until the police arrived.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted using fake Dh500 notes to buy goods and said he was using and distributing fake currency in Khor Fakkan but denied promoting drugs.

The suspect told police that his roommate was in possession of the drug pills.

The police raided the residence of the suspect and arrested the remaing suspects. A total of 5,000 drug pills were found in their possession.

The case was referred to the public prosecution.
