Abu Dhabi: Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairperson of the Family Development Foundation and Chairwoman of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, called for launching a campaign of solidarity for gender equality.

Shaikha Fatima called for the participation of Gulf officials, university chancellors, academic cadres and businessmen from the private sector to urge members of the community to allow women to take up their natural role at work and productivity, so they can contribute to the nation’s development and progress.

Shaikha Fatima made the statement during the inauguration of the Abu Dhabi Office of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), located at the headquarters of the General Women’s Union. The statement was issued on Shaikha Fatima’s behalf by Reem Abdullah Al Falasi, secretary-general of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood.

Shaikha Fatima hoped that such an event would pave the way for a new phase of cooperation between the United Nation and Gulf Cooperation Council in fields concerning women empowerment.

Shaikha Fatima also emphasised the key role played by UN Women and its relevant bodies in ensure the implementation of gender equality on a wider scope and empowering women in both the national and international arenas.

“We believe in intercultural communication between peoples as a means to build a peaceful world that believes in positive dialogue and tolerance, as well as humanitarian values,” said Shaikha Fatima.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of UN Women, was present during the inauguration.
