Abu Dhabi: Emiratis travelling outside the UAE can now obtain health insurance that will cover treatment for emergency medical concerns abroad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced today (February 20).

The Ministry launched the insurance programme today in collaboration with The National Health Insurance Company –Daman.

“Today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has launched the ‘Traveller’ programme, a health insurance policy for Emiratis who are travelling. This represents a practical step to ensure the wellbeing of our people,” Dr Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, announced on his Twitter account.

A yearly insurance plan under the programme costs Dh399 for adults and Dh250 for children, and can be obtained directly through the Ministry website www.mofa.gov.ae.

A source told Gulf News that the programme would be especially beneficial to Emiratis who were frequent travellers and have small children or family members in tow.

“The main benefit is that this insurance programme will cover emergency treatment in any international health facility,” he said.

In general, Emiratis from Abu Dhabi, as well as Emiratis who live in Abu Dhabi emirate, are covered by the Daman’s Thiqa health insurance programme. While this plan provides medical treatment in the UAE, it covers emergency treatment only at specified health facilities abroad. In contrast, the new Traveller health plan has more widespread emergency medical coverage.
