Dubai:

An Emirati student was honoured by Dubai Civil Defence in recognition of his brave act of leading his brothers to safety when a curtain in his house caught fire.

The student, Masoud Nasser Khamis, was home with his brothers in Oud Al Mutaina area earlier this month when a curtain in a room caught fire. The young boy did not panic and instead followed every precaution that was taught to him by his teacher on what to do in case of a fire.

He led his brothers outside the house, disconnected the power supply to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the house and called the civil defence to appraise them of the situation and firefighters from Al Qusais station reached the house and got the situation under control.

“I managed to contain the fire, disconnected the power supply before taking my brothers to the neighbour’s house and called the Civil Defence,” Masoud said.

Brigadier Jamal Bin Adhed Al Muhairi, assist director general for Resources and Supportive Services in Dubai Civil Defence, went to the boy’s school, Dubai National Private School, Al Twar branch, and honoured him for his bravery.

“The student managed to contain the fire by practising what he learnt from fire safety training sessions conducted at his school. We are honouring him today in front of his classmates for his brave act,” Brigadier Al Muhairi said.

Dubai Civil Defence said they trained teachers about how to respond during a fire and the teachers in turn imparted the knowledge to their students.

Dubai Civil Defence honoured Malek Al Dradiekah, the school’s principal, for its keenness to educate students on fire safety.
