The Cuban-American actress Elizabeth Pena died from complications due to alcohol abuse according to a death certificate published by the TMZ website on Wednesday.

The death certificate obtained by the gossip website stated Pena suffered from “cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol.”

The actress died at the age of 55 in Los Angeles on October 14.

The actress, who was born in Cuba and lived there for part of her childhood, had her first major role starring in 1979 in El Super, a movie about Cuban exiles living in New York City. She became known for portraying Rosie in La Bamba (1978), the biographical story of early rock and roll singer Ritchie Valens.

Recently, Pena played Sofia Vergara’s mother on the Emmy-winning series Modern Family.
