Dubai: Dubai’s new markets for used building materials and electrical appliances, and used furniture and utensils will soon open following the completion of the construction of their buildings, the Dubai Municipality said on Sunday.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality, recently visited the buildings of the new markets, which have been completed and handed over to the municipality by the contractors, the civic body said in a press release. The opening dates for the buildings will be announced later.
The aim of the project is to assemble all used furniture, electrical appliances and household utensil showrooms in one location rather than allowing them to spread randomly in an unorganised way within the city, making it difficult for the majority of the public and re-export companies to purchase and look for the appropriate items and transport them.
The scrap market for building materials and electrical appliances behind the municipality nurseries in Warsan includes a main building consisting of 71 shops with public services, market administration office, fast food outlets, a mosque for men and women, 53 outdoor display outlets, 80 parking lots for trucks, loading and unloading areas and 760 parking spaces for visitors.
Built at a cost of Dh100 million, the market has a building area of 43,000 square metres on a land area of 11 hectares, the municipality said.
“The scrap market for building materials is the realisation of the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to preserve the country’s resources, to build a green economy and establish an environmentally sustainable city as well as to apply the highest standards of quality and excellence, in order to preserve the environment and society,” said Lootah.
The used furniture and utensils market, located in Nad Al Sheba 3, includes 120 shops, half of them for the sale of furniture and the rest to sell utensils. It also includes an external plaza, restaurant area for selling snacks, market administration office, service buildings, toilets and other facilities.
The market, built at a cost of Dh77 million, has a building area of 28,800 square metres on a land area of 17 hectares.
Lootah pointed out that these projects are part of the efforts of the Government of Dubai to complement the specialised market projects offered by the emirate, in line with the development and growth, the two streams that have made Dubai a prominent city competing with the world’s finest cities. During the visit, Lootah was accompanied by Dawood Al Hajiri, assistant director general for Engineering and Planning Sector, Ahmed Abdul Karim, assistant director general for General Support Sector, Juma Al Fuqae, director of Assets Management Department, Jabir Al Ali, director of General Maintenance Department, and Marwan Abdullah Al Mohammad, director of General Projects Department.
