Dubai: Dubai Municipality on Thursday launched its corporate policy on climate change, the first at the UAE level, to support the process of transforming Dubai into a low-carbon green economy.
The move is part of its ongoing efforts to support the goals and directions of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in achieving sustainable green development.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, said the policy outlines the main climate change issues, targeting both the reduction of emissions (mitigation) and adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
The announcement of this policy, he said, is taking place in conjunction with many other programmes and initiatives adopted by the municipality to deal with climate change. “Examples include the Car Free Day initiative, Blue Carbon Project, Coastal Protection Project, as well as projects concerned with the extraction of methane gas from the landfills, and waste-to-energy,” Lootah pointed out.
He added that the Climate Change Policy was developed using examples from best applicable international practices. “These included not only from government sources, but the climate change policies of large international private sector corporations such as Intel and the Coca-Cola Company,” said Lootah.
The policy is in line with the Dubai Strategic Plan 2021 and UAE Vision 2021, he said.
The launch of this policy also comes in conjunction with the preparations taking place in the UAE and Dubai to participate in the 22nd Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention of the Parties on Climate Change (COP22), which will be held in the City of Marrakech, Morocco, from November 7 to 18.
