Dubai: The Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup, which started as a concept to bring together representatives of the duty free industry to Dubai for a few days of friendly competition, has turned out to be one of the most successful and popular golfing events on the industry calendar.
For 25 years, the World Cup has attracted top executives from the industry worldwide, with this year’s event attracting more than 115 players representing countries such as Great Britain, Germany, France, Ireland, Denmark, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines and the Netherlands. The remaining players living in the UAE and Gulf region and include representatives from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Bahrain.
Day one of the tournament will kick off on Wednesday with play taking place at the Trump International Golf Club and will move to Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club on the second day. Commenting on the forthcoming tournament, Colm McLoughlin, the executive vice-chairman and chief executive of Dubai Duty Free, said: “The 25th running of this tournament represents another milestone for Dubai Duty Free and we are looking forward to welcoming our players and guest this year. The players enjoy the atmosphere of friendly competition, and the social interaction makes it a good meeting place for those involved in the duty fee industry.”
Past champions include Steve Flanagan, Raimund Legnar, Brendan O’Shea, Noel Fox, Jan Baljet, Ulrik Moller, Adel Zarooni, Art Miller, John Kammerman, Nayma Maya, Mark van Huesden, James Kfouri, Gurbax Singh, Clark Francis, Rabih Sfeila, Dermot Davitt, Denise Kennedy, Bayer Khan and last year’s winner Scott Campbell.
The two-day tournament is by invitation only and for amateur players with a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. The 36 holes are played in accordance with Stableford rules, with players playing off full handicap.
