Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police will use the latest innovations to examine drug addicts and identify them at borders and in public places. The police signed an agreement with an international company to supply the test kit which can give results in less than 5 minutes. The police, who announced the move yesterday, said it will be the first law enforcement institution to use this up-to-date testing facility in the Gulf and the Middle East.

“The new urine test kit, which can analyse and examine twelve types of drugs, can reveal if the person is a drug addict or not in three to five minutes and eliminate the spread of narcotics- related crimes,” said Brigadier General Dr Saif Bu Dhudaira Al Ameri, director general of security and ports affairs.

“The drug screen cup came to reveal drug addicts and users, implement justice and security, and provide the highest levels of human rights,” he added.

The urine test bottle contains a test strip, which has small square colour fields, which show the results and identify the type of the drug in a few minutes.

Abu Dhabi Police is the first in the Middle East and the GCC countries to acquire the newly released examination. The new urine test bottle has been examined several times in laboratories in different criminal cases, Colonel Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Hammadi, manager of the forensic evidence department, said.

“The urine test bottle is easy to use and does not require technicians. Only adequate training has to be given to the investigator or the bottle user in order to know how to obtain a urine sample and identify the quality of the drug through the categorised colour fields on the test strip,” he added.

The new examination will provide outstanding benefits to many organisations, which conduct inspections for labour gatherings and will be a key solution in many criminal cases.

“The new urine test bottle will help in various criminal cases, where a drug examination is needed on the spot to reveal suspects. The new urine examination will be less time-consuming. Instead of sending the urine sample to the criminal laboratory and waiting for results for two or more days, the new bottle will facilitate the process,” said Ebrahim Ali Al Hosani, expert and assistant in the branch of toxins and drugs at the department of chemical analysis.

Al Hosani, who suggested using the drug screen cup, pointed out that the new narcotics testing will provide a great community service for families, who suspect that one of their children might be a drug addict.

The new examination assures high levels of accuracy in results.
