Canadian rapper Drake caused frenzy in Abu Dhabi over the weekend as he only made it to one of two scheduled appearances during the Grand Prix.

The capital city and its night clubs are typically abuzz with celebrities around F1 time. This year, Big Sean, Sean Paul, Rihanna and Rita Ora were in town.

Drake, who garnered more than 1 million likes posing next to a UAE flag on his Instagram, failed to appear at a scheduled gig at the VIP Room pop-up on Yas Island on Saturday. Organisers told Gulf News tabloid! this was due to a high number of attendees.

“Due to Drake’s overwhelming popularity the sheer number of people that turned up outside of VIP Room made it completely unsafe for Drake to even enter the venue in the end so he was unable to perform,” wrote a media representative in an email.

Despite this, Drake performed at the same venue on Sunday. This, after global star Rihanna — who often collaborates with Drake (Take Care, Work, Too Good) — performed an after-race concert at du Arena in front of 40,000 people.

Drake performed a stadium concert in Dubai for the first time last year.
