Dubai: A medical doctor has been stripped off his licence and barred from practising medicine in the country for unethical practice, a senior Health Ministry official said.

The medical licensing committee of the Health Ministry revoked the licence of a doctor after discovering that he had a number of medical prescriptions for depression and psychiatric problems despite being a urologist.

Dr Ameen Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health Policy and Licensing in the Ministry of Health and Vice-Chairman of the Medical Licensing committee, said the drugs were found during a random inspection at the doctor’s facility.

Dr Al Amiri emphasised that this was not the first time that the doctor had been found to be committing unethical practices. But the same doctor, whose full name was withheld, maintained his innocence in the past through a signed document. In the recent inspection, however, the team found proof of the doctor’s wrongdoing.

As a result, the committee decided to cancel the doctor’s licence and to revoke his name from the medical registry in the UAE based on Article no 12 of the federal law No 7 of 1975. The law states that every licensed doctor must perform his duties according to the field of medicine with utmost accuracy and honesty and should maintain the oath of the profession.

Dr Al Amiri added that the Ministry of Health appreciates the role of the private sector in improving the profession and protecting the health and well-being of the community. The ministry is also very keen to enact legislation for the medical profession and increase the inspection of private medical establishments to ensure their compliance with local and international standards.

The ministry reserves the right to legally pursue those who infringe UAE laws in order to enhance and preserve the rights of patients and the health of the community.

The ministry has revoked the registration of five doctors over the past five years for similar actions and violations.
