Sharjah: A new cycling and jogging track is set to open behind National Park by the end of the year, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

The project, at a cost of Dh7.4 million, comes as part of the vision of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to place health at the top of the development agenda of the emirate and provide society a healthy environment to take part in outdoor sports, RTA has said.

Sulaiman Al Hajiri, director-general of Sharjah RTA for roads affairs, said that the project includes two rubberised tracks for cyclists and joggers, stretching from behind the park on the road towards Sharjah-Al Dhaid. Each of the two tracks is three metres wide and 2.2km long, he said.

Yousuf Saleh Al Suwaiji, director-general of RTA, said the track gives residents living next to the park and visitors a new healthy, entertainment option.

The project, he added, is one of the biggest launched by the emirate, and is in line with its development plan to achieve happiness for all members of society.

He said that the track was built to create a unique sports experience for people and is consistent with the vision to make Sharjah the healthiest capital in the region.

Giving further details on the project, Al Hajiri said that there will be an area between the two tracks which will be planted as part of a beautification process. There will also be 120 environment-friendly LED lamp posts installed which will save energy.
