Abu Dhabi: Three brothers who were accused of attempting to steal an ATM machine while under the influence of narcotics have been sentenced to five years in prison, the Court of Appeals ruled on Sunday.

Last year, the men were arrested after they tied a rope around an ATM machine in Al Ain, and tried to yank it out by using a pick-up truck to pull it.

The offenders used an eight-metre rope to execute their plan and the machine broke into four pieces as they were driving in a residential neighbourhood. Around 400 metres away from the crime scene, the rope finally broke.

A civilian who witnessed the crime chased the perpetrators before calling the police. This prevented the criminals from going back and taking the stolen cash.

Gulf News earlier reported that the men are unemployed and had criminal records.

Another brother, initially accused, was found innocent of the attempted theft and driving under the influence of narcotics. The incident took place on January 2 of last year.
