Dubai: A female manager and male salesman landed in court for kissing in a car after they met in a pub.
Two police officers were said to have spotted the 35-year-old Egyptian salesman and the 34-year-old Georgian woman kissing for three to five minutes in the man’s car while they were under the influence of alcohol in February.
Meanwhile the couple has denied kissing and admitted to drinking alcohol when they defended themselves before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court.
Prosecutors accused the duo of exchanging kisses and consuming liquor.
“It is impossible for me to have kissed him on his lips … I wouldn’t do such a thing. I just brought my cheek towards his because I wanted to say goodbye and thank him for giving me a lift after we met in the pub. I wanted to give him a thank you kiss,” the Georgian woman told the presiding judge in courtroom 11.
“Did she kiss you or not? According to her statement before prosecutors, the woman suspect confessed that she kissed you on the cheek?” the presiding judge asked the salesman.
“She was just saying goodbye and thanking me for dropping her to her house. She did not kiss me on the lips … what happened is that she drew her cheeks close to mine wanting to kiss me on the cheek. I moved back quickly. We did not do anything wrong,” replied the Egyptian.
Records said two policemen, who were patrolling in Al Muteenah at 3.30am, spotted the suspects hugging and kissing each other in the man’s car that was double-parked.
The duo was taken to the police station for interrogation for kissing in the car and being drunk.
“Why did you confess that you kissed him when you were questioned by prosecutors?” the presiding judge asked the woman.
“I did not confess. It was a translation mistake. I do not have good command of English, the language in which I was questioned,” the Georgian woman replied via the court’s Russian language translator.
Meanwhile the salesman handed the judge a written defence argument in which he asked the court to acquit him.
The 35-year-old also handed the court a copy of a traffic violation for having double-parked his car in the street.
“The traffic violation confirms that I had double parked my car and this counters the policemen’s claims that I had parked my car to exchange kisses with the woman. Had I intended to pull over and kiss the woman, I wouldn’t have done so in the middle of the street … I would have parked elsewhere. The policemen claimed that we exchanged kisses on the lips out of malice, because I had a verbal argument with one of them. The woman suspect confirmed that in her statement,” the Egyptian mentioned in his defence.
The couple asked the court to acquit them of the charge of kissing.
A ruling will be heard soon.
