Dubai: Consumer prices in Abu Dhabi rose 1.6 per cent in August 2017 compared to the same month in 2016, driven by an increase in the prices of housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuels.

The inflation rate in August is the second lowest this year, after July when year-on-year inflation was at 1 per cent.

The highest inflation rate in 2017 was recorded in March and was 2.6 per cent.

According to a report from the Statistics Centre Abu Dhabi (Scad) on Sunday, the inflation rate in August brings the rise in consumer prices in the first eight months of 2017 to 1.9 per cent year-on-year.

Prices of housing, water, electricity and gas rose 2.7 per cent year-on-year in the first eight months of 2017, accounting for 49 per cent of the increase in the Consumer Price Index. Meanwhile, prices of transportation rose 4.2 per cent in the first eight months and accounted for 31 per cent in the overall increase in consumer prices.

Scad’s report also said food and beverage prices went up 1.3 per cent in the first eight months, while tobacco prices rose 3.6 per cent.

Abu Dhabi region contributed around 53 per cent of the total increase in prices, while Al Ain contributed 41 per cent and Al Dhafra contributed 6 per cent.
