You know that time Drake sang about how he started from the bottom and now he’s here? ‘Here’ being ‘the top of the world’, presumably. Well, it seems like Conor Maynard can relate — at least as far as cars go.
Maynard, who is celebrating his 22nd birthday this Friday in Abu Dhabi during Grand Prix weekend, is set to headline performances at the Project Etoiles pop-up on Yas Island. Miguel, Sidney Samson, and DJ Irwin will join.
Though the British pop star doesn’t follow Formula 1, he’s made quite some progress in terms or what he drives himself — starting with a Vauxhall Corsa, two doors of which wouldn’t work, and ending up with a sleek Porsche. Not too bad, Maynard.
Ahead of his Friday night performance, he filled tabloid! in about his best and worst birthday gifts, the most embarrassing songs on his iTunes and what triggers his road rage.
Q: What’s your favourite song to perform live, and why?
A: Probably R U Crazy, as it’s the newest, and I just get to jump around and be crazy, which is always fun.
Q: Since you’re about to celebrate your 22nd b-day, tell us: What’s the worst birthday gift you’ve ever received?
A: Probably getting dumped on my birthday by text message. I was 12, we had been together 2 weeks. I thought we’d be forever.
Q: What about the coolest?
A: I got an Xbox One last year, which I didn’t expect as it didn’t actually come out until the day after my birthday... that was cool.
Q: What has been the most memorable age in your life?
A: Probably 18. I passed my driving test and I got signed (and obviously turned 18) all in one year!
Q: What song on your iTunes would you be most embarrassed for us to find?
A: Probably songs from High School Musical... actually you know what no. I’m not embarrassed. I’M PROUD. We’re all in this together.
Q: Who’s the most famous person you’ve got saved in your phone?
A: Hm, I have a few of the One Direction boys, Ne-Yo, quite a few people really.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
A: Probably just to enjoy everything as it comes! Don’t get too caught up in the stress of it all, just enjoy it.
Q: Seeing as this is the Grand Prix weekend, tell us: What was the first car you owned?
A: A Vauxhall corsa! £300... Beautiful
Q: What kind of driver are you?
A: Erm... I like to get to places quickly...?
Q: Are you likely to get road rage?
A: Well, if someone or something stops me from getting there quickly...
Q: Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket?
A: No... but that’s probably mainly due to luck over anything else.
