Dubai: The Community Development Authority (CDA) kickstarted its month-long celebrations to honour workers across Dubai on Sunday coinciding with the International Labour Day.

Called ‘Honour Labour’, the initiative is a joint-effort between CDA and its licensed social clubs and private sector in Dubai. The initiative was launched few years ago to spread awareness about workers’ rights and to instil a greater sense of cohesion within Dubai’s community.

“We work closely with the private sector and the social clubs to establish new channels with the labour sector and to increase their satisfaction and engagement in the community. This is part of the private sector responsibility and in the core of CDA vision to have a better lifestyle for everyone living in Dubai,” a spokesperson from CDA said.

“The International Workers’ Day is an ideal occasion to convey this message to all the workers around us who are the real engine for the civilisation and development,” he added.

The activities began with a “fun day” organised by Smart Life at the Indian High School that benefited more than 2,000 workers.

The events will continue until the last week of May and will target different segments of workers at their accommodations.

As part of the celebration, gifts and thank you cards were handed out to more than 5,000 workers. More than 1,700 workers participated in free health check-ups and healthcare awareness campaigns. Some 400 workers participated in a musical concert organised by talented individuals in their peer group. In Dubai Investments Park, 600 workers participated in a reading day organised at their accommodations.

More than 1,400 workers are expected to participate in a number of sports activities planned throughout the month while 200 workers are also slated to attend skills training workshops.

CDA is collaborating with several social clubs to organise the activities including the Dubai Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre, Pakistan Association Dubai, Smart Life, Sri Lankan Welfare Association, Model Service Society and Karnataka Sports and Cultural Club. More than 15 private companies are supporting the celebrations.
