Reading is said to be one of the ingredients of success as it stimulates the ability to think. Here are three UAE events that will help instil a love for reading and writing in children.

Emirates Airline Festival of Literature

The sixth Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, which runs until Saturday at InterContinental Hotel, Dubai Festival City, has workshops, panels and other events tailored for children.

Yvette Judge, Acting Festival Director and Head of Children’s Programming said that on the Education Days held on the 4th and 5th children met authors face-to-face. “We [had] a number of workshops for children on everything from writing and drawing to learning Arabic,” she said.

Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival

In April, as part of The Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), the sixth Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival will take place between 15 and 25 at the Expo Centre in Sharjah.“[It participates] in the creation of an art scene that caters to all social segments”, says Ahmad Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, Director, SIBF. Hundreds of local and international publishers are expected to participate.

Abu Dhabi International Book Fair

At the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, held at Adnec between April 30 and May 5, participants will include Arab and international publishing houses. While programme details are unavailable, at a press conference last month, it was announced that more than 20 authors, illustrators and poets from Sweden have been invited. “Visitors will be able to smell, taste, hear, feel and see different dimensions of Sweden,” said Max Bjuhr, Ambassador of Sweden in the UAE, at the conference.
