Media is everywhere. From what we read, to what we watch to what we listen – the media industry influences our lives in many ways. A media and communication degree, unlike what many think, isn’t limited to just films or television – it encompasses a variety of fields and specialisations.

Universities offering media and communications degrees look for students with critical analysis skills, understanding of current media trends, research abilities and above all, a passion for the industry. Strong communication skills are paramount since, after all, media is about communicating.

Experience is crucial in this industry. Make sure you do internships that give you exposure and build up your CV. Seek out colleges and universities that offer academia-industry linkages, or are consistent ‘feeder’ schools to the industry you wish to be in.

There are few strict academic requirements. Make yourself an ideal candidate by highlighting and showcasing your passion through extracurricular activities such as being part of the school film club, recording school events etc.

In the UK, there is no strict path. Universities such as LSE, Leeds, University of London and King’s College London all offer world famous degrees in the subject. Nearby, the University of Amsterdam and a large number of German universities offer world-class education as well.

In the US, the land of Hollywood and what seems to be every TV show, you will be spoilt for choice as well. USC, UC-Berkeley, UT-Austin and University of Wisconsin are some of the most reputed places to study media and communications. Remember, you will have to give the SAT if you are applying to any of these US universities. Across the border, both McGill and University of Western Ontario offer solid programs as well.

After graduation, you will be able to join a wide variety of jobs (with recent studies showing nearly 80 per cent of students being employed, it is a highly employable degree). Traditional companies (such as Disney), PR agencies, radio companies, newspapers and publishers and traditional marketing companies all look to hire holders of this degree.

In fact, such a degree can open you up to a world that you didn’t even expect – governments and all large corporations have huge communication departments and look to hire Media and Communication graduates.

So if you’ve decided this is the field for you, start preparing now!
