Abu Dhabi: The Federal Supreme Court, presided over by Chief Justice Falah Al Hajeri, on Monday upheld a 10-year jail sentence for a man found guilty of insulting and mocking a UAE leader.
The court also dismissed the plea of the Emirati man, identified as Q.A.A.S.B., and upheld the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeals’ Dh500, 000 fine.
In another case, the court heard the appeal filed by an Emirati, H.A.M.S., who was sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted of joining Daesh terrorist organisation.
According to the lower court’s documents, the man travelled to Thailand to meet a member of the terrorist organisation there.
The man said “not guilty” when asked to enter a plea to the charge against him.
He told the court there was no evidence whatsoever on his attempt to join any terrorist organisation.
“I have never met any member of any terrorist organization and I travelled to Thailand on tourist visa.
The hearing was adjourned to January 29, when a final ruling will be given.
In a third case, an Emirati amn, A.S.A.H., who was sent to a counseling centre at the Interior Ministry, failed to show up at the hearing.
The court set January 29 as a date for a final ruling.
The man was acquitted of posing a possible threat for upholding ideology of terrorist organisations by the lower court.
